2021 Online Camp Leadership Program
Due to the current COVID-19 pandemic, all regular China summer camps are being hosted through the Internet.
All camps are 15 days long starting from 15 April and are sponsored and monitored by the various provincial governments in China.
Our all-volunteer teams of parent-teachers are overwhelmed with historically high enrollment, so we are seeking qualified Teachers Assistants (TA) looking to help lead camps
Enhance your camp experience! Accumulate volunteer hours! Learn how to follow instructions!
Details:
We are currently looking for students between ages 14 and 18 who are currently enrolled in one of the Chinese American Youth Association China Summer Camps. Students will be Teaching Assistants for the current session. Outstanding Tas may be approved to be Camp Leaders for the next session of their choice.
Skills:
Assistants will be helping teachers and leaders with technology and graphic design.
After camp teachers assign homework and select the highest quality submissions, Assistants should keep these in a document and submit them to the teacher by the end of the day
Assistants will lead groups of campers under age 11.
Assistants will assign fun projects and experiences for campers under their care
Assistants will host Zoom video calls with campers.
Assistants should be prepared to answer questions from students.
If you are a high schooler interested in being a TA, you can sign up through the Google Forms below. Common TA tasks include (but are not limited to): Making electronic fliers, making video compilations, sending out daily homework and other interesting articles or videos, teaching campers songs, organizing talent shows, and attending follow-up Zoom meetings with other TAs. It is important to remember that this requires organization, creativity, and communication; part of the task is to make things fun for the campers as well, so it is highly encouraged to dabble into other ideas as well! Kahoot games, special events for Chinese holidays, and other activities are all viable. The tasks may sound like a lot of work, but communicating with your fellow TAs and the teachers can often mitigate everyone's workloads.
You (NOT your parents) will be added to multiple WeChat groups, sometimes up to four or five depending on how many camps and TAs are available. You will typically be in a team of 3-4 TAs to assist teachers, so how your group splits up the workload is up to in-group discussion. Large camps are not uncommon, so a camp may have more than one WeChat group as a result of the sheer number of campers (for example, because 110 children signed up for the Beijing camp, 55 go into one group and 55 go into another). You will also be added to a TA-specific group on top of the administrative group you share with the teachers. TAs are expected to interact at least three times a day with teachers to show that they are present and maintain a constant stream of communication with teachers.
It is noteworthy that there is a mandatory TA training session that occurs before each new round of camps--if you decide to not show up to it, you will be taken off the list. More information will be provided in the WeChat group!
